What does “1-in-100 year event” mean?

A common misconception is that a 1-in-100 year event can take place only once every 100 years.

It actually means there is a 1 in 100, or 1% chance of a storm or flash flood event occurring in any year, at any time, in any place. It does not mean a storm or flash flood event only takes place once in 100 years.

While these events are unusual, they can still occur over consecutive years or multiple times within a year.

A better term is Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP). This refers to the probability of a storm or flash flood event occurring in any year.

For example, a 1% AEP means the chance of a 1-in-100 year flood occurring this year, next year, or in any year is always 1%.
