PROJECT UPDATE

Thank you for your interest in this project.

The Community Safety Framework was adopted by Council on Tuesday 13 December 2022.

The framework provides a clear definition of community safety and outlines the role of the City, external partners including Victoria Police and the broader community, to build a safer Geelong region together.

The final framework can be found in the document library of this page.

The City now looks forward to working with the community and stakeholders on implementing the framework.

Thank you to everyone who contributed their feedback to this project.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

Our Community Plan 2021-2025 outlines the action to "Partner with key stakeholders and community safety networks to develop a community safety framework". To assist with the development of the framework, we would like to hear what community safety means to you.

In 2013, the Council adopted the Community Safety Strategic Statement, which defined safety for the organisation and defined the role of local government in community safety.

As part of this statement the Council defined ‘community safety’ as the right of all people living, working or visiting the municipality to feel and be safe.

The City of Greater Geelong has a vision to be the best place to live through prosperous and cohesive communities in an exceptional environment. Council accepts the role of supporting safe community participation and access to places, services and opportunities by:

  • Connecting people in community life through supporting and delivering programs;
  • Planning, building and maintaining safe community places and environments;
  • Partnering with other community safety organisations and groups;
  • Managing risks and minimising hazards in the community; and
  • Developing individual and community responsibility. [1]

In the period February 2022 - 11 March 2022, the City asked what community safety meant to the Greater Geelong Community to assist with the development of the framework. There was a fantastic level of interest.

As part of the consultation a series of questions were asked to learn more about how residents defined safety, what things created a feeling of safety and those feelings that created a feeling of being unsafe.

The community told us:

  • Community safety varies from person to person and captures the below themes:
    • The ability to move freely without harm
    • Police presence
    • A sense of belonging
    • The ability to feel safe during day and at night
    • Road Safety
    • Clean and open public spaces and places
  • Please read the full list in the engagement report.,

We have used this feedback to develop the draft Community Safety Framework.

We would like to once again thank everyone for their time and contributions so far and look forward to your feedback on the draft to help shape and finalise the final framework.

Your feedback is a vital part of our planning for the future, and helps us make decisions to ensure the framework meets community expectations.

We'd love you to read the draft Community Safety Framework and provide your feedback below.

Once this stage of engagement closes for feedback, we will consider all responses as we finalise the framework.

Feedback from the community and any recommendations for change will be presented to Council for approval and adoption at the Council Meeting later in 2022.

The adopted framework will be published on the City's Have Your Say page. An updated summary report will also be published on this page, which will include what we heard and what changes were made in response to feedback.

Your feedback - Stage 2
