Do you live in Greater Geelong and have an interest in heritage?

Expressions of interest are sought from four independent community representatives who are residents or ratepayers of the municipal district and who satisfy at least one of the following criteria:

• have expertise in heritage or a proven heritage interest
• reside or are employed within the municipality, are members or employees of an organisation within the municipality
• have knowledge of conservation and historical issues affecting the Municipality
• have the ability to access historical or conservation networks and stakeholder groups.

Committee membership is on a voluntary basis with the term of appointment being two years.

The Committee meets around 4-6 times per year for a period of 2-3 hours, outside of business hours at the City offices in central Geelong or via an online meeting.

Background

The role of the Heritage Advisory Committee is to assist Council on cultural and natural heritage matters within the municipality, through advocacy on, and awareness raising of, emerging local issues.

The objectives of the Heritage Advisory Committee outlined in the current Terms of Reference are to:

• Celebrate and promote awareness of cultural heritage within the Municipality.
• Provide advice on marketing and promotion opportunities for heritage within the Municipality.
• Provide advice and recommendations to Council on the documentation, interpretation, management and conservation of history and heritage, including places, objects, collections, in the Municipality.
• Make recommendations to Council about further work required to identify, document, protect, conserve and promote the heritage of the Municipality.
• Provide recommendations for nominations of places to Local, State or National heritage registers.
• Advocate in a professional manner on behalf of the community and celebrate the community’s history and heritage.
• Assist Council in sourcing external funding or sponsorship opportunities to undertake heritage identification, conservation, promotion, management and education.

The Committee comprises 12 representatives of community heritage organisations, four independent community representatives, a representative of the Geelong Library & Heritage Centre, and several City officers from heritage-related business areas.

The Committee Chair is Councillor Peter Murrihy and the Deputy Chair is Councillor Belinda Moloney.
