Welcome

OVERVIEW

The City of Greater Geelong is seeking community and stakeholder views and feedback in order to decide on whether to consider specific changes to its proposal for vehicle access restrictions in Little Malop Street (between Dennys Place and Moorabool Street).

This consultation is to determine if a balance can be struck between the competing priorities including access, sense of place and pedestrian safety.

The current street network provides unrestricted vehicle access in Little Malop Street (between Dennys Place and Shorts Place). There is currently no vehicle access provided from Moorabool Street. Vehicles currently self-manage the right of way in this section of Little Malop Street due to it only being wide enough to accommodate a single vehicle at any one time.

The endorsed proposal currently involves:

  • Providing automated bollards on timers in Little Malop Street (on the eastern side of the entrance to Dennys Place); and
  • Restricting vehicle access in Little Malop Street (between Dennys Place and Moorabool Street) except between 4am and 10am, on any given day.

The alternative access options being considered would likely involve

  • Providing a permanent road closure restricting vehicle access in Little Malop Street (between Dennys Place and Shorts Place);
  • Creating a new unrestricted vehicle access (entry/exit) from Moorabool Street into Little Malop Street and Shorts Place; and
  • Undertaking streetscape works in Little Malop Street and Moorabool Street to accommodate the new access, including:
    • Removal of shared zone treatments (to separate pedestrians and vehicles in the space);
    • Removal of furniture and other streetscape elements; and
    • Intersection changes, including a new pedestrian crossing and signal changes

COMMUNITY AND STAKEHOLDER VIEWS AND FEEDBACK

In conjunction with implementing vehicle access restrictions in Little Malop Street, we want to hear from stakeholders and the community regarding the provision of alternative vehicle access from Moorabool Street to Little Malop Street (between Moorabool Street and Shorts Place) to determine if a balance can be struck between competing priorities including vehicle access needs, look and feel and pedestrian safety.

All feedback and views will help to inform Council's further consideration of the need to provide additional vehicle access from Moorabool Street into Little Malop Street (between Moorabool Street and Shorts Place).
