Introduction

In 2020, the City introduced a 12-month commercial waste and recycling trial for the Central Geelong Laneways Precinct. The trial aimed to improve the overall appearance of the precinct by removing the large number of bins stored in laneways that were unsightly, restricting access, causing odour and attracting vermin. The permanent storage of bins in a public area, including laneways, also contravenes our Neighbourhood and Amenity Local Law.

Trial

The trial saw two shared rubbish compactors installed at the northern end of Shorts Place, with one of the compactors collecting general waste, and the other collecting co-mingled recycling.

Business owners in the Laneways Precinct (properties bound by Moorabool, Ryrie, Malop and Gheringhap Streets) were able to sign up to use this new service, with 32 businesses signing on.

Review

We are now seeking feedback from businesses and property owners to measure the success of the trial and identify any opportunities to improve the service.

Once this engagement is complete, a report recommending the most appropriate course of action will go to Council for a decision about the future of commercial waste management in the laneway’s precinct.
