Discover the Beauty of Nature at Sparrovale Wetland Reserve - Ngubitj yoorree
14 September 2023
Section one opening

We are pleased to announce the section one opening of Sparrovale Wetland Reserve Ngubitj yoorree, the City’s newest nature reserve in Charlemont. Join us for the official celebration of this remarkable addition to our region, details below.
Spanning 500 hectares, Sparrovale reserve was acquired by the City in 2019 to manage stormwater impacts on the adjoining internationally important Connewarre Wetlands. The reserve also provides habitat for a diverse range of wildlife, from migratory shorebirds like sharp-tailed sandpipers, to resident waterbirds such as our majestic brolga, as well as many frogs and fish.
Greater Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan welcomed the completion of stage one of the wetlands.
“Council is proud to have established a significant environmental area, which increases the region’s biodiversity as well as being a major drawcard for locals and visitors,” Mayor Sullivan said.
“To have the drainage infrastructure, pest plant and animal control completed will ensure the ongoing protection of threatened wildlife and native plants.”
Environment and Circular Economy chair Councillor Peter Murrihy is looking forward to the future of the reserve, as it transitions from agriculture to an area for conservation as further areas will be opened to the public.
“Sparrovale Wetland Reserve Ngubitj yoorree is a special place in nature, with almost 100 different bird species having been observed on site including the iconic brolga,” Cr Murrihy said.
“We encourage our community members to include Sparrovale in their weekend plans. There are spots to picnic, bird watch or take a mindful stroll through nature.”
Wadawurrung Traditional Owners will welcome us on Country with a traditional smoking ceremony followed by activities that ensure something for everyone.
- Bug Blitz a hands-on insect experience
- Guided walks to discover the reserve’s rich history
- Water Watch identifying our local water-bugs, and
- Nature group displays.

Background
The Sparrovale - Ngubitj yoorree Wetlands Master Plan was adopted in July 2021.
The Master Plan divides the development of the wetlands into three phases:
1. 2019-2022: completion of major drainage infrastructure works, pest plant and animal control, protection of threatened flora and fauna.
2. 2022-2030: establishment of public reserve, plus continued pest plant and animal control and revegetation.
3. 2030-2040: connection of the Barwon River Trail to Geelong, and promotion of Sparrovale Wetlands as a key tourism, environmental, cultural and recreational site for the region.
The draft master plan has been developed with input from Parks Victoria, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority, and the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation.
