Introduction

Councillors are entitled to receive an allowance while performing their duty as an elected official. The Victorian Government sets the upper and lower levels for councillor allowances.

The Minister for Local Government decides and announces annual automatic adjustments to councillor allowances in the Victoria Government Gazette. The last adjustment made by the Minister was on 1 December 2019.

The current councillor allowance is $31,444 per annum.

The Local Government Act 1989 requires Council to review councillor allowance levels by 30 June in the year following a general election.

Council intends to maintain the councillor allowance at $31,444 per annum.

Any person has a right to make a submission in respect of a review of allowances.

SUBMISSIONS PROCESS

In accordance with section 223 of the Local Government Act 1989, submissions are invited on the proposed Councillor allowances and any person may make a submission to the Council. All submissions will be considered.

If any person wishes to be heard in support of their submission, they must include in their request to be heard in the written submission. This will entitle them to appear either personally or by a person acting on their behalf, before a Submissions Review Panel. The date, time and location will be advised.

Submissions on this matter must be received by 27 April 2021.
