Help shape how we name our places
Council is responsible for giving names to public places that recognise and reflect our culture, heritage, landscape and identity.
To help us, we have developed a draft Place Naming Policy that guides how we name and rename public places in our City.
The policy was developed following conversations with our staff, Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation and Cultura – a local organisation that represents the voices of our multicultural communities.
We’re now inviting the broader community to read the draft policy and share their thoughts.
Purpose of the policy
The purpose of the policy is to have a clear and consistent approach to naming places and things that Council is responsible for, such as sports facilities and public parks.
The draft policy will help us make decisions that recognise the symbolic power of place names in promoting fairness, transparency and respect, and meet legislative requirements.
For example, in line with community values and legal requirements, the City will prioritise the recognition of Aboriginal heritage, gender equity, our multicultural community, local heritage and active community involvement throughout the naming process.
Place names must also be easy to find and recognise by emergency services, for the delivery of goods and services, and to ensure community recognition.
In addition to engagement on this policy, the process of naming and renaming individual places will involve further community consultation.
