Welcome

In May 2024, Council unanimously resolved to develop an LGBTQIA+ Action Plan. The development of an action plan is in alignment with the community aspiration for Geelong as “an inclusive, diverse, healthy and socially connected community”. It also supports the principles of the Council-endorsed Social Equity Framework, which aims to address barriers faced by disadvantaged groups. By understanding the unique challenges experienced by LGBTQIA+ individuals, we aim to foster a community built on respect, equity, and inclusion for all.

The community was consulted during August and September 2024 to hear about how Council can make the LGBTQIA+ community feel more included in Greater Geelong. We asked people about their aspirations for LGBTQIA+ inclusion and about priority actions for the City to take over the next four years.

The LGBTQIA+ Action Plan Engagement Summary Report is now available.

Feedback closed on Monday 16 September, 2024.

We received 220 responses to the online survey, with 26% of respondents identifying as being part of the LGBTQIA+ community. We also held four consultation workshops, with a total of 39 attendees.

The engagement heard that the key barriers included a lack of safety, challenges finding connection and community, and experiences of discrimination.

Priority areas for action were identified as:

  • Leadership and cultural change
  • Coordination and networking
  • Education and awareness
  • Celebration and connection.
