Digital connectivity, smart technology and innovation are unlocking vast opportunities for Cities to become more liveable, sustainable, prosperous and well-connected.The City of Greater Geelong is determined to make the most of new and emerging smart city opportunities.

A smart city is one that applies digital technology, data and innovative practices to improve the livability, sustainability, collaboration and economic opportunities in the city. With elements including smart parking technology, Internet of Things (IoT), environmental sensors and innovative resource management processes, the focal point of smart cities is people.

The City of Greater Geelong took an ambitious first step in the Smart City space in 2015 with the Digital Geelong Strategy. In 2017 Council reaffirmed their capacity and commitment in this space through the Greater Geelong: A Clever and Creative Future community vision. This vision, aiming to guide Geelong towards being recognised as a clever and creative city-region, is as follows:

By 2047, Greater Geelong will be internationally recognised as a clever and creative city-region that is forward looking, enterprising and adaptive, and cares for its people and environment.

To achieve this vision and support the City’s economic, environmental, cultural, transport, tourism, digital, access and governance aspirations, the City is developing a dedicated Smart City Strategic Framework.

Geelong is already well into its smart city journey, with a number of smart, innovative and unique projects underway including:

  • Fibre to the Bellarine
  • Enhanced Broadband trial
  • Improving free public WiFi
  • Smart Parking
  • Smart Waste
  • SMART.NODEs
  • The Geelong Data Exchange
  • Lorawan Sensor Network (Internet of Things)
