OVERVIEW

The City of Greater Geelong and the State Government are working together as the Revitalising Central Geelong (RCG) partnership to plan and deliver projects identified in the RCG Action Plan.

One goal of the RCG Action Plan is to create gateways into the city for workers, residents, students and visitors.

The Arrival Indicators project has identified several key entrances into central Geelong that will soon be home to improved streetscapes, new art and design. Through the project, access to and navigation around central Geelong will be vastly improved.

Yarra Street (between Lt Malop & Ryrie St) was identified for an upgrade. The proposed concept designs include measures to enliven and form better pedestrian connections and amenity.

This project is being delivered as part of the $382.48 million Geelong City Deal, a collaborative project to transform Geelong and the Great Ocean Road by the Australian Government, Victorian Government, City of Greater Geelong and Revitalising Central Geelong.

  • The Yarra Street improvements will deliver:
    • tree and ground cover planting
    • kerb extensions
    • refurbished gas lantern
    • new furniture
    • better pedestrian amenity
    • public art

Details on the design: Yarra, or Yarrow, is Wadawurrung language for small creek. The design incorporates free flowing design, as well as text in the pavement, to acknowledge and express this meaning.

Outstands have been formed at the intersections to provide safer pedestrian connections and there is space for seating, sculpture and greenery.

Trees have been placed to form an avenue that will eventually link with the lower half of Yarra Street.

The concept design also proposes to refurbish and return a heritage gas lamp back to its original location on Yarra Street

The project will ultimately enhance the public realm and facilitate wayfinding.
