Low-cost camping engagement summary

Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the survey as part of a review into the merits of establishing a low-cost camping site and Recreational Vehicle (RV) amenities (such as an RV dump point) in Geelong’s north.

We received a total of 659 submissions over the 22 days the survey was open. Of the residents that completed the survey, 86% were supportive of the concept and agreed there is an opportunity to establish a low-cost camping site and RV amenities in the northern areas of Geelong.

You can find a summary of the engagement in the Document Library on this page.

A summary of the survey results will also be included as part of the report by Urban Enterprise, which will be discussed at the Council meeting on Tuesday 28 June 2022.

Overview

We’re working with independent consultants Urban Enterprise to gain the community's feedback as part of a review into the merits of establishing a low-cost camping site and Recreational Vehicle (RV) amenities (such as an RV dump point) in the northern areas of Geelong.

The northern suburbs currently host several major events, including the Australian International Airshow, Lara Food and Wine Festival and many sporting and cultural events at the Geelong Arena.

From spring 2022, North Geelong will become an entry point for thousands of travellers annually, including those with RVs, as the new home for the Spirit of Tasmania.

It is expected the relocation of the Spirit of Tasmania to Corio Quay will provide a significant boost to the economy, increasing tourism expenditure by $57.3 million in Geelong by 2030, and an increase in RV traffic.

Following this consultation, a report will provide information and recommendations to Council on:

  • The viability of establishing a low-cost camping site and RV amenities in Geelong;
  • Potential or preferred site locations;
  • Economic impacts of a low-cost camping site and RV amenities; and
  • Community and environmental impacts of a low-cost camping site and RV amenities.

Your input to this engagement is important as it will help us to understand the community's thoughts on a potential low-cost camping site in the northern areas of Geelong.

This review builds on and updates the initial assessment and RV Friendly Town Review (Council report) completed in October 2013.

  • Next Steps

    Your feedback will be used to inform the recommendations in a report to Council at a future meeting, at which point the report will be made publicly available.

    The findings will be presented to Council and discussed at its meeting on Tuesday 28 June 2022.
