155-205 Upper Paper Mills Road, Fyansford (south of Redgum Island)

155 - 205 Upper Paper Mills Rd, Fyansford

Current dog orders: Dogs on lead

Proposed dog orders: Dogs prohibited

Given the significance of the remnant vegetation in the Sanctuary Zone below Redgum Island, the wildlife that inhabits the area, and the indigenous cultural values of the Barwon River, we propose dogs be excluded from this part of Barwon–Moorabool River reserve.

There is significant damage to a section of the riverbank and associated vegetation from dogs accessing the river here. There is plenty of open space where dogs can be walked in other parts of the river and the proposed changes do not impact the flow for dog walking. Other places can be provided for dog swimming away from this highly significant area.

Natural values

The Sanctuary sustains a 2-hectare patch of Floodplain Riparian Woodland vegetation – one of the largest remaining patches of native vegetation on the Barwon River through Geelong. It supports a wide variety of woodland and wetland bird species - with over 110 species recorded in recent years.

Contains large old remnant trees with hollows.

Atlas of Living Australia records also show a variety of native animals inhabit the Sanctuary including Platypus and Ring-tail Possum. The Sanctuary is one of the premiere sites for biodiversity in the City of Greater Geelong.

Cultural values

Waterways have significant indigenous cultural value and this site falls within an Area of Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Sensitivity with registered sites
