Current dog orders: Dogs on lead

Proposed dog orders: Dogs prohibited

Rationale for dog order changes

Given Dooliebeal’s highly significant cultural heritage value and significant biodiversity value, we propose dogs no longer be permitted. There are ample walking paths and open space along Armstrong Creek where dogs can be walked without requiring access to this environmentally sensitive area.

This reserve is one of the last remaining refuges for wildlife in the Armstrong Creek growth area.

Natural values

Remnant Grassy Woodland vegetation supporting a wide variety of woodland bird species.

Contains large old remnant trees with hollows

Atlas of Living Australia records show 116 native species have been identified in the reserve including a diversity of birds and other animals, and a survey undertaken in March 2013 recorded 8 species of bats.

Cultural values

One of the last places in the Geelong region where Traditional Owners lived their traditional way of life.

There has been increasing scrutiny of the management of the reserve by Wadawurrung Traditional owners, especially since the reserve was officially renamed ‘Dooliebeal’.

A highly significant cultural heritage site that falls within the area of Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Sensitivity with registered sites
