Sparrovale – Ngubitj Yorree is a future 500-hectare reserve, (opening to the public in the first half of 2023), with the capacity to support a variety of visitor uses.

A large portion of the reserve is environmentally and culturally significant, and we propose no dogs be permitted in this area. This area is shown in yellow on the map.

The blue areas on the map will eventually be dog on leash. The first area to be opened to the public will be the southern blue section on the map. People are already accessing the reserve for dog walking even without the reserve being officially opened.

Natural values

Wetland habitat for 1000s of water birds. There is a 4 km stretch of the Barwon River which has had minimal disturbance in the past. Some swans breed in the large natural wetland and waterbirds along the edge of the river. Brolgas, an FFG Listed species is often observed onsite with fledglings. Several frog species utilise the site, including Growling Grass Frogs. The site is also habitat for rakali, skinks, snakes and native swamp rats. There are areas of sensitive native vegetation such as saltmarsh.

Cultural values

A wetland system close to Barwon River and Lake Connewarre complex so a very significant place for Traditional Owners. Part of the reserve is within the area of Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Sensitivity.
