Rail Projects Victoria - Project Overview

The South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication project being conducted by Rail Projects Victoria, will deliver more frequent and reliable services and better stations for passengers on Victoria’s busiest regional rail line.

There are a number of projects underway to deliver better and more frequent services for the communities between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds. This includes the Waurn Ponds Station upgrade, Waurn Ponds stabling and the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication.

The South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication will deliver five trains per hour during the peaks, and three per hour between the peaks for Marshall and Waurn Ponds stations as well as improved reliability along the line. The project includes:

• removing two congested level crossings at Fyans Street and Surf Coast Highway and replacing with an elevated rail bridge
• upgrading South Geelong and Marshall stations with improved facilities including new station buildings and forecourts, new second platforms, accessible pedestrian overpasses, increased shelter and better wayfinding
• delivering signalling upgrades and around 8km of track duplication from South Geelong Station to Breakwater Road, and from Marshalltown Road to Waurn Ponds Station
• more than 5kms of new shared user paths between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds
• new green open spaces and urban design improvements
• a business case to determine the infrastructure required to deliver more services, including upgrades to the rail tunnel between Geelong and South Geelong and the rail line over the Barwon River.
