- 84 people provided feedback.
- 19% of respondents were from Waurn Ponds or Grovedale.
- Respondents use the park for skateboarding, riding scooters, BMX and inline or roller skating along.
- 83% travel by car to get there. 13% use active transport and 4% use public transport.
Project Overview
The Waurn Ponds Skate Park re-opened in September 2023 following a major renewal thanks to $600,000 from the City and $1.34m from the Victorian Government investment through its Sport and Recreation Victoria Community Sport Stimulus Infrastructure Program.
Community input was incorporated into the design. The concept plan that guided the works is shown below. The updated skate park includes:
- a new street drain area and snake run bowl;
- improved street plaza;
- an active recreation area with various activity options;
- an additional shade structure and seating areas.
We have retained the iconic steel ramps however planning is underway for the maintenance and renewal works that are required due to their condition.
Upgrade feedback
We asked the community for feedback after the works were complete and for their priorities for other upgrades. The responses we received will help guide future works subject to budget allocations.
Our survey was open from 5 September to 29 December 2023 for feedback on the works and priorities for future upgrades.
Here's some highlights of what we heard:
-
-
- 91% of respondents would recommend Waurn Ponds Skate Park to others and comments generally appreciated the range of features and catering to various skill levels.
- Overall satisfaction was 3.8 out of 5.
- People visit from all across Greater Geelong and beyond and the responses noted the atmosphere is mostly positive. Some respondents noted the level of use can increase the chance of conflicts between users.
-
- Top preferences for future works were toilets and sports lighting to allow people to use the park for longer.
- A drinking fountain is required and the ramps need repair - planning is underway for these works.
- Other suggestions included requests for more advanced provision and more skate parks and upgrades across other areas.
Concept Plan
This concept plan was developed based on community input. It guided the upgrade works and identified an area for a future advanced bowl and stair set. Other future upgrades may include toilets and sports lighting. Planning is underway for renewal of the dirt jumps within the precinct, for more information on that project please visit the Geelong Mountain Bike Facilities Renewals page.
