A million begins with one

Planting one million trees is huge, help us understand what you value about trees.

Welcome, help us grow a greener region

The City is seeking your input into the One Million Trees Plan, which aims to create a sustainable, liveable, more resilient Geelong by planting more trees over the next 10+ years. The One Million Trees Plan will investigate the capacity, feasibility, costs and benefits associated with a long-term tree planting plan across the City.

Through the implementation of the plan, the City is looking to address urban heating, population growth and climate change. Planting more trees will provide more shade, produce cleaner air and create more appealing places to live.

The City has engaged consultants REALMstudios to prepare the One Million Trees Plan.

How you can help

We will be engaging with you in multiple stages during the project: -

Phase one: Initially we would love to hear your thoughts on what you value and like about trees and where you think they should be planted by taking our survey (survey closed).

Phase two: In the second stage of the consultation, we will share the draft plan with the community for feedback. We would love to hear your feedback on this.

Quick facts

Here are some quick facts on where we are at currently with emissions and canopy coverage and some predicted outcomes if we don't increase our canopy cover.
  • In 2019, the City's community Green House Gas emissions were estimated to be 3,232,000 tonnes. With electricity accounting for 60% of this.

  • Our current tree canopy coverage is between 7-10%. Our target is to increase it to 25%.

  • If we don't increase our tree canopy coverage we will see an increased urban heat island effect and increased flooding.

  • On Sunday 31 July 2022, National Tree Day, the community planted an estimated 2,500 trees along a section of the Ted Wilson Trail (Hamlyn Heights).

  • Large healthy trees can remove between 60 and 70 times more air pollution than smaller trees.

  • Temperatures can be between 5 - 20 Degrees Celsius cooler underneath tree canopies.
